<body><h1>Protecting a Range or Sheet</h1><p>To prevent others from modifying the content of a spreadsheet, you can protect a specific range or an entire sheet. However, this feature is not a security measure—users can still view, copy, and export protected content.</p><div class="section"><h4>Note:</h4><ul> <li>Only the spreadsheet owner and users with Manage permission can create protection rules. They are not restricted by any protection rules.</li> <li>Only the spreadsheet owner, users with Manage permission and the rule creator can edit or delete a protection rule.</li> <li>Users who inherit Manage permission via Windows ACL can create, edit, or delete protection rules and are not restricted by them.</li></ul></div><h2><a name="manage"></a>Manage Rules and Permissions</h2><h4>To protect a range or sheet:</h4><ol> <li>Click <strong>Data</strong> > <strong>Protected sheets and ranges</strong>. A list of protection rules appears on the right.</li> <li>Click <strong>Add a sheet or range</strong> or double-click an existing protection rule to edit.</li> <li>Choose what to protect: <ul> <li>To protect a range: Select <strong>Range</strong>, enter a description, and type the range or click the spreadsheet icon to select it.</li> <li>To protect a sheet: Select <strong>Sheet</strong>, enter a description, and select a sheet from the drop-down menu. Optionally, you can specify ranges to exclude them from this rule.</li> </ul></li> <li>Click <strong>Set permissions</strong> and <a href="#permissions">specify user permissions</a>.</li></ol><h4><a name="permissions"></a>To set permissions for a protected range or sheet:</h4><p>By default, anyone can edit a protected range. You can customize permissions as follows:</p><ol> <li>When adding or editing rules, click <strong>Set permissions</strong>.</li> <li>Choose one of the following options: <ul> <li><strong>Show a warning when editing this range</strong>: Users receive a confirmation prompt before making changes but are not blocked from editing.</li> <li><strong>Choose who can edit this range</strong>: Only specified people or groups can edit the protected content.</li> </ul> </li></ol> <h4>To delete a protection rule:</h4><ol> <li>Click <strong>Data</strong> > <strong>Protected sheets and ranges</strong>.</li> <li>In the list of rules, hover over the rule you want to delete and click the <strong>More</strong> icon (⋮).</li> <li>Click <strong>Delete</strong>.</li></ol></body>
